Europe: Hornbach, ADEO and OBI grow most strongly

Plus 8.1%, plus 7.8%, plus 6.6% – with these growth rates, the number five, the number one and the number three in the DIY trade European top 10 are setting themselves apart from their competitors. The German DIY store operator Hornbach increased net sales gained on its home market and abroad in the year 2019 to EUR 4.428 bn. European market leader ADEO from France reached EUR 21.379 bn, and OBI, market leader in Germany, made sales of EUR 6.866 bn. These figures have been established by Dähne Verlag for its Statistics Home Improvement Retail. The complete volume will be out in August – however the statistics experts at the German professional publisher, which specialises in the DIY and garden industry, have already published the ranking of the ten largest DIY store groups. Overall, the top 10 of the European DIY trade sector made sales of EUR 65.026 bn last year. That was EUR 2.880 bn or 4.6% more than the previous year.


Romania: Leroy Merlin reports 20% growth

In 2019, ADEO-owned Leroy Merlin Romania, the second player on the Romanian DIY market, increased sales by more than 20%, in the year in which the French retailer registered over 12 million clients in its stores. The retailer launched in February 2020 the new communication campaign “1001 projects together”, that focuses on the quality time with family and and involves the employees of the company.

Poland: Adeo Group on growth course

A new Leroy Merlin store opened last month in Rzeszow in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. The new store is located in the prosperous district of Witosa and covers a total sales area of 10,000 sqm. The outlet is divided into 13 specialist departments and offers an assortment of 36,000 products. With the current opening, the French Adeo Group now operates a total of 65 Leroy Merlin stores and nine Bricoman outlets in Poland. In the coming months, two more Leroy Merlin outlets will be launched with locations in Wielicka near Krakow (Lesser Poland Voivodeship) and in Szczecin (West Pomerania). In addition, in December 2019, a store of the small-format Leroy Merlin Urban will be realized in the state capital Warsaw.

Spain: Leroy Merlin reports 6.6% growth

The sales of Leroy Merlin España in 2018 totalled €2.182 bn, equivalent to growth of 6.6%. If the sales of the Aki chain, which also belongs to the French outfit Groupe Adeo and which has merged with Leroy Merlin in 2019, are taken into account, this gives total sales of €2.476 bn. Leroy Merlin increased its online sales by 20.8% to €47.3m. The Leroy Merlin and Aki chains now operate 137 stores between them in Spain. Seven new outlets are expected to open this year. 21 Aki stores are also being converted to the new Leroy Merlin Compact format, with Adeo investing €121.4m in this project. Overall 28 new store openings and 46 store conversions are planned within the next five years.
