Originally slated to open its doors in May, the Show was postponed to September. However, as the team continue to make the safety of everyone at NHS their top concern, and looking at the continued impact of COVID-19, NHS has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 event. Instead of an in-person experience, NHS plans to host a virtual trade show dedicated to providing education and support that recognises and addresses the direct and essential needs of the hardware industry, later in the year.
Co-hosted by the China National Hardware Association and Koelnmesse, CIHS has been held for 19 continuous editions and become the largest international professional hardware show in the Asia-Pacific region.
With the entire area almost fully booked by the spring of 2020, and thus outstanding registration levels for spoga+gafa, the trade fair situation increasingly came to reflect the current developments around Covid-19 and the economic situation.
For this reason, the spoga+gafa team reassessed the overall situation together with the Advisory Board and decided that it was best to respond to the cancellations and wishes of a large number of industry exhibitors and visitors by suspending spoga+gafa 2020.
At the request of the industry, Koelnmesse have also permanently moved the date for spoga+gafa to the first half of the year. In future, this means that the largest garden lifestyle trade fair in the world will be held at a time more convenient for orders by large segments of the industry. In 2021, spoga+gafa will take place from 30 May to 1 June.
“We are working together with the garden sector to prepare ourselves for a new normal in daily life. We are underscoring this shared conviction under the hashtag #gardenbackstronger,” Koelnmesse says. The management of Koelnmesse has issued a further statement to exhibitors and visitors to the Spoga+Gafa show. In the statement, business division director Catja Caspary and Stefan Lohrberg, director of Spoga+Gafa, confirm: “As delighted as we are that most of the comments we’ve been getting from exhibitors and visitors have been confirmatory, we take their concerns very seriously, especially the uncertainty felt by our partners from overseas.” The feedback has encouraged the trade show management team to make the decision to let Spoga+Gafa go ahead on 6-8 September 2020 in Cologne.
The Hardware Forum Italy 2020, the trade fair for the Italian hardware industry, is to take place this year together with the Colorday conference. For this reason, Koelnmesse, who organises the Hardware Forum Italy in Milan, has entered into a partnership with the organisers of Colorday, Radio Colore and Colore & Hobby. The third edition of the conference will be dealing with the topic of “Showroom, the space that gives value to the store”. Participants are retailers and tradesmen, but also architects as well as experts in merchandising, marketing and communication. The Hardware Forum Italy will take place on 22-23 September in hall 3 of Fieramilanocity, Colorday will take place on 22 September.

During a digital press conference, Stefan Lohrberg (l.), Director Spoga+Gafa, Catja Caspary, Vice President, and Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer, presented Koelnmesse’s plans for this year’s show in September. Koelnmesse has once again affirmed that Spoga+Gafa will be taking place on 6-8 September 2020. In a video statement which the event organisers shared at an online press conference on 13 May, Chief Operating Officer Oliver Frese says: “It is our declared aim to open the trade fair on the planned date. The exhibitors are showing high interest in the event and due to the fact that other industry events have had to be cancelled or postponed, we are once again recording increased growth in the number of applications.”
The latest trade fair cancellation due to the corona crisis is Security Essen, which was planned for 22-25 September 2020. The trade fair for security technology will not return until 2022 (20-23 September). The customer expectations and the performance promise of the international trade fair for the security industry could not be fulfilled under the given circumstances, according to organisers Messe Essen. The decision to cancel was therefore made in close coordination with the partner associations.
Several key trade fairs for the DIY and garden industry have had to make decisions against the backdrop of the global corona crisis.
Messe Frankfurt jointly decided with its partners – ZVEI and ZVEH – and with the Trade Fair Advisory Council, to defer the eleventh Light + Building, with the next exhibition taking place in 2022 from the 13-18 March. Messe Frankfurt had originally aimed at an alternative date for the world’s leading light and building technology trade fair in Autumn.
There are also two important changes in the pet product range: the event organisers of the two international trade fairs Interzoo (Nuremberg) and Zoomark International (Bologna) have agreed to postpone each of their events by one year. This means: Interzoo, which has been completely cancelled for 2020, will take place on 1-4 June 2021 and Zoomark International on 9-12 May 2022.

Despite coronavirus and the emergency situation worldwide, more than 670 exhibitors have already decided to attend Christmasworld in Frankfurt am Main from 29 January to 2 February 2021. This means that 90% of the exhibition space is already filled. This underlines the fact that the consumer-goods sector is looking optimistically towards the time following the corona crisis. In this mood the encounter format of a trade fair is playing a decisive role in re-launching from a position of strength into the new season of 2021.
